Batley Parish Church was built in the fifteenth century, although there has been a church on the site since the eleventh century. Parts of the building built in the reign of KIng Henry VI still remain
Greater quantities of coal, wool and cloth were transported to Batley after the construction of a road in 1832 linking the town to the toll road connecting Dewsbury and Gomersal. Batley became the centre of the 'shoddy trade' in the late nineteenth century, being involved in the reweaving of woolen rage and clothes into reusable items.
