The Normans built a wooden castle at Sheffield in the twelfth century and by the late thirteenth century a market had been established in the town
Sheffield's name is derived from the River Sheaf, which flows through the city

'Sheffield plate' was a silver plating technique invented by Thomas Boulsover, of Sheffield's Cutlers Company, in 1743. The crucible refining process for steel was also developed in the city
