Wetherby Fact File
Historically, Wetherby was a key crossing point on the River Wharfe and was used by travellers journeying between Edinburgh and London on the Great North Road. The ancient bridge which crosses the river is now a Grade II listed monument
The town was documented in the eleventh century Domesday Book as 'Wedrebi', which means 'ram farm'
Wetherby was sold in the nineteenth century by the sixth duke, William Cavendish, in order to fund the building of Derbyshire's Chatsworth House
