Halifax is a minster town, the twelfth century Halifax Minster being dedicated to Saint John
The name of the town comes from 'Holy Flax' and it is believed that the ehad of John the Baptist is buried there. The saint features in the town's coat of arms
Halifax was a hub for wool processing and weaving from the fifteenth century. Trading took place in the Halifax Piece Hall which today accommodates wine bars, cafés, and small boutique shops
In 1853 The Halifax Building Society was founded in the town, now being a subsidiary of the Lloyds Banking Group
In the centre of the town is the Victorian Borough Market
