Pontefract Fact File
The name of 'Pontefract' means 'broken bridge', likely to refer to a bridge which crossed a local stream called the 'Wash Dike'. The town is located on an old Roman road to Doncaster (now the A639)
Ilbert de Lacy built Pontefract Castle and the market place in the eleventh century as well as establishing Pontefract Priory. The castle was rebuilt in 1400 and is allegedly the place that Richard II murdered. Near the castle there are remains of an Anglo-Saxon Church and a cemetery with graves dating to the late seventh century
The town is famous for its 'Pontefract Cakes'
